BALA TRI - 14 SEPTEMBER |
|
|
Manx Tri Club were again
well represented at the
Bala Standard Distance Triathlon in North Wales, with 4 Club members
making up part of the 450 strong field.
Antony Bell-Scott, Ian
Harrison, Graham Stigant and Russell Collister made up the Manx field and
all 4 had strong races with excellent results.
|

|
|
|
|
|
|
 |
The day started
with a very low lying mist, limiting visibility to about 100meters. This
resulted in a slight delay to the start, whilst the organisers made the swim
a straight out and back course along the side of the lake (rather than a
triangle) in order to keep competitors as closely grouped and as close to
the shore as possible for safety reasons. Although the lack of visibility
made the swim trickier (and probably longer as there was a lot of
zig-zagging) than normal, the mist soon cleared to give near perfect racing
conditions of sunshine and a light breeze for the bike and run legs. |
|
|
| The Age Groups
were slightly broader than usual with Antony and Ian competing in the Senior
Men 17-39 (a total 186 in Cat), and Graham and Russell in the 40-49 category
(a total 131 in Cat). Antony Bell-Scott, fresh back from the Lake Geneva
70.3 Triathlon, where he had unfortunately suffered a broken wheel rim 30k
into the bike leg and had been forced to retire, was very keen to secure a
finish, and led the Manx team home in a great time of 2:05:38, and claiming
a very impressive 29th place overall. Graham and Russell were
also pleased to collect prizes for 2nd and 5th places
respectively in their Category. All 4 set PB’s and Ian beat his own target
time by over 5 minutes. |

| END 2 END |
|
|
 |
What a good day
for all the Manx Tri Club members who participated in today's
End 2 End! A
big congratulations especially to Jooles who was first lady home in a time
of 4:32:42 - and that despite having broken her wrist six weeks ago. Oh, and
her partner Rob was fastest MTC member in a time of 3:28:21, 22nd overall - and so we
promise not to laugh about that porch turbo set-up
anymore!!

| Thanks must go
to all those who helped with the event, in particular June, the organiser,
Ian Brand for refereeing, Graham for the signage, Tony Cawte for draft
busting, Kevin for time-keeping, and of course the droves of cheerful
marshals and lap counters. Thanks too to John Watterson for giving the
event such good coverage in Friday's Manx Independent and to Dave Kneen for
taking the
photographs. |

| SWIMMING
LESSONS - BALLAKERMEEN POOL |
|
| A message from
Christine Barwell: |
|
|
Bob Unsworth phoned me this
week to let me know that Ballakermeen pool is due to re-open shortly. Bob
teaches swimming through the IOM College. This year’s swimming courses were
not advertised with the other part-time courses due to the uncertainty about
the pool. All things being well the courses will be advertised separately
in the local press in the near future, or for further information contact
Bob at the College during the day. The ‘Advanced’ class takes place Monday
and Friday each week from 7 to 8pm. The sessions are quite mixed, for
example - technique, group speed work, fartlek and a bit of chat. I have
being swimming there for more years than I care to remember and have always
found them extremely beneficial and good fun. Hope to see a few new faces
at this year’s courses. Thanks Christine

| VITRUVIAN
NATIONAL LONG COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008 |
|
Congratulations
Cubby on coming fourth in his age group (45 to 50 years) at last weekend's
Vitruvian event!! The course was a 1900m swim, an 85km bike and a 21km
run and he completed it in a time of 4 hours and 39 minutes. Seems
Cubby is going longer and faster as he ages gracefully!

LONDON TRI |
|
| A
message from Antony Bell-Scott:
I bought a charity bond place to do the London Tri
on 9th August, and I have now also won a place in a competition I entered. I
can't get my money back for the bond place but I can transfer it to another
person.
If anyone wants to race please let me know by
Friday. I paid £175 for the slot but any reasonable offer accepted.
