British Triathlon Championships
The Manx Tri Club were well represented at the British Triathlon Championships in Liverpool at the weekend. In all, 13 were competing across all the events. Over 2,000 age group athletes were taking part.
The weather forecast was spot on, with rain coming in from 10 am, allowing the majority of the age groupers doing the standard distance, to finish in the dry. The Elites didn’t have it so good.
Rebecca Storrie was competing in her first elite draft legal race at Sprint distance and was up against all the seniors too, as all 49 started from the pontoon at the same time. She acquitted herself well, holding a mid-place position out of the swim and building throughout the race, gaining positions on the run and managed to outsprint another competitor on the line to get 17th position overall and 4th Junior out of 21 with the fastest run split and still has two more years as a junior!
Sam Brand had a brilliant race, producing his best performance to date in his short triathlon career, having only started racing seriously last year. He finished 12th overall and second in his age category and only seconds off the top spot, his time 2:00:17.
Off the back of Island Games, European Championships and his University Graduation it has been a full-on fortnight.
Joseph Ricciardi was competing in the Age Group Sprint event and won his age group finishing a fine 2nd place overall only 2 seconds off the win.
A further well deserved podium went to Hannah Howitt who secured 3rd place in age group and 4th overall from a field of 110 in a time of 2:15:13 achieving a nine minute PB despite having picked up a time penalty. Hannah had the fastest female swim time of the day in the standard distance at 20:21 and was leading until the final lap of the bike.
Karen Shimmin was hot on Hannah's heels and had an excellent race with a very strong run to finish 6th overall and 4th in age group.
