STANDARD DISTANCE & SPRINT DISTANCE EVENT

VENUE: MOORAGH PARK, RAMSEY, ISLE OF MAN

Ramsey's Mooragh Park is an ideal venue for an Open Water Triathlon event.
This year, the September event will give the competitors the choice of racing either an Olympic (Standard) distance or a Sprint distance.  The swim for both events will be Open Water, in the Mooragh Lake.  The lake is shallow and is therefore ideal for anyone trying an Open Water event for the first time.  The cycle course takes competitors out on the North East coast of the Island towards Bride, on to Andreas and then back towards Ramsey - 1 lap for the Sprint distance and 2 laps for the Standard distance event.  The cycle course is relatively flat with only 2 hills worthy of note.  The run course is based in and around the Park area and the outskirts of the town and incorporates a couple of climbs on each lap.

Entries will be limited at this event to 100 competitors.

There are frequent flights and ferry services to and from the Island and further information can be obtained through the links below.  There is also a wide range of accommodation available right across the Island, and again there is a further link here to the Isle of Man Tourist Board website.

Neil MacGregor competed at Bolton in the Ironman UK on 1st August.
He had devoted a year of training and many personal sacrifices to give this one his best shot.
Neil finished in 12:25:02 to give him 3rd in M55-59 age group and 361st overall.
Splits were 1:05:23 swim  6:43:33 bike and 4:27:19 run.

With only one qualifying slot for Kona in this age group it was always going to be hard. He did however get a podium position and a trophy to treasure. Well done Neil!

Also competing with Neil was Steve Foulkes in M45-49 . This was his second Ironman UK  this time coming 89th in agegroup in 13:58.

Also going long was Daniel Ankers who competed at the inaugural Outlaw Triathlon, Nottingham on 8th August.
Daniel finished 89th in M30-34 and 681st overall  in a time of 14:57:08. Daniel has had a rapid step up this year from novice to middle distance at Bala and now Iron distance.

Three of our local triathletes were on the Great Britain squad competing at the 2010 European Triathlon Age Group Championships in Athlone, Ireland over the weekend.  Andy Bell, Juan Kinley and Russ Collister all qualified for their championship places at events held in 2009.

The Championships took place over 3 days and included a Sprint & Olympic race for both the Elites and the Age Groupers.  As seems to be the norm at the moment, the weather on Saturday was beautiful sunshine with a fresh, but very manageable, south westerly breeze - but then came race day and it all changed.  Heavy drizzle and very strong gusty winds blew down most of the course barriers and banners overnight on Saturday, leaving the organisers with an uneviable 4am start to re-build the course before the 1st wave of athletes set off at 7.30am.

Good luck to Andy Bell, Russell Collister, and Juan Kinley who will be competing in the European Championships this Sunday. Joining them from France will be expatriate Colin Nunnington who competed in Ramsey last Year.

If anyone has entered for the time trial scheduled for this weekend, it has been cancelled due to lack of volunteers to marshal.

Liverpool Triathlon
A huge number of of our athletes took part in the Liverpool Triathlon. The hot weather made for difficult going but some good results were achieved including a win for Wendy Sandford in the F 35-39 and 10th lady overall.
Top honours for the men went to Roger Raatgever who was 3rd M40-44 and 27th overall, very closely followed by Chris Crellin also 3rd but in M45-49 and 31st overall. Roger caught Chris on the run and passed just before the finish.

ETU Long Distance Champs Vitoria-Gasteiz
Paul Cubbon took part in the European Triathlon Union Long Distance Championships in Spain on Saturday.
Paul's time of 8:09:43 gave him 15th place.

The only competitor  to represent  Manx Tri this year at the Dambusters race was Paul Swindale.
I think the proximity to the Liverpool triathlon this year has reduced MTC participation. Good luck to all those competing at Liverpool this weekend by the way.
This is Paul's favourite classic distance race and although not as fast as other years, enjoyed the racing.
He finished 188th overall and 36th in age group out of a field of 790.

The ambient conditions at the time of the race will probably dictate that wetsuits will be optional. If the water temperature is 22°C and above wetsuits are forbidden. However it is unlikely that the water would get that warm . At 14°C and below they are mandatory.

This being said the wearing of a wetsuit is advisable, particularly for the weaker swimmer. It makes you faster because of the  additional buoyancy and will make the whole experience much more enjoyable.

We will be having some training in the Mooragh lake once it warms up.

Should you not wish to take the plunge just yet and buy your own wetsuit they are available for hire from a number of sources. Some of them do a season hire at reasonable rate.
Make sure when you book your suit that it is for triathlon not surfing or windsurfing. Triathlon suits are a lot more flexible.
