Ironman Barcelona
Jill Bunyan & Steve Kennaugh both took part in the inaugural Ironman Barcelona early in October.
After a 30 minute delay at the start due to torrential rain and a lightning storm, the swim got underway in somewhat choppy conditions, with the ladies starting shortly after the pros. The bike course was still partially flooded around the town of Calella and a mud slide had had to be quickly cleared off the course!
Jill had an excellent swim, exiting the sea in 1:10:50 to come 2nd in her age group, also beating some of the lady pros. An overall finish time of 12:51:27 gave her 13th in her age group.
Steve also had a great time for his first swim over this distance, being only a couple of minutes behind, but struggled on the bike leg (he did not know at the time that he was a full blown Type I diabetic!)
Jill's splits were: Swim 1:10:50 , Bike 6:12:30 and Run 5:18:43, Finish 12:51:27.
Steve's splits were: Swim 1:12:57 , Bike 6:50:21 and Run 4:56:27, Finish 13:10:40.

IronMan Mallorca 2014
Two more Manx athletes completed their first Ironman this weekend at the holiday Island of Mallorca, although I am guessing it was no holiday!
Riszard Komasa of the NSC representing his home country Poland did a tremendous swim, considering it was non wetsuit, in 1:02:08. A bike of 5:45:51 and run of 4:17:51 gave an overall time of 11:15:42. This was good enough for 133rd in age group (M40-44) and 704 overall.
Also on their first full distance race was a well prepared Gaynor Evans. Her splits were: Swim 1:18:36, Bike 7:54:47, and run 4:42:41 giving an overall time of 14:17:25.
18th in age group (W50-54) and 1,792 overall. 2,554 athletes took part.
The event was won by Britain’s Tim Don in 8:34:02.

Ironman Wales 2014, Tenby
Karen Shimmin and Andy Page both contested Ironman Wales at the weekend. As the first Iron distance race for them both, they did not choose an “easy” one. The event, now in its 4th year, is renowned for its tough bike and run but this year also comprised a choppy swim.
As expected, Karen, competing in the 18 – 24 year age group, had an excellent swim, exiting the sea in 1:07:32 that would give her fastest in her age group, mixing it with the back end of the lady pros. A bike split of 7:08:58, run of 5:00:09 and finish time of 13:34:11 gave her a superb second in age group and 781 overall with a field size of 1,850.
Andy’s splits were: Swim 1:04:15 , Bike 7:49:09 and Run 4:25:38, Finish 13:46:38, placing him 134th in the 45-49 age group and 861st Overall.

Bala Standard Distance Tri 2014
A small Manx Tri Club contingent travelled to Bala at the weekend to contest the European Qualifying Standard Distance Tri. This is a regular favourite for Manx triathletes, on a generally flat course which has produced some fast times in the past. Competing in a field of 559 were Lynsey Elliot, Christine O’Shea, Wendy Sandford and Antony Bell-Scott.
Conditions were perfect for racing, with the early mist on the lake clearing to give a bright sunny day with little breeze to speak of.
Antony Bell-Scott completed the race 2 hours, 2 minutes and 2 seconds, but later has a 2 minute penalty added for drafting, which he vigorously disputed!! This placed him 5th in AG.
Lynsey Elliot achieved a new Personal Best time, finishing in 2 hours 24 minutes and 15 seconds, placing her 7th in AG.
Wendy Sandford had a solid race, to finish in 2 hours 35 minutes and 52 seconds, 11th in AG. Christine O’Shea also raced well, to finish in 2 hours, 38 minutes, 5 seconds, placing her 19th in AG.
Paul Swindale was meant to be competing but had to withdraw after breaking his toe in his mount line incident at the IOM Tri champs a week earlier.
Antony and Lynsey both achieved Island Games consideration times.

Wetsuits
It is looking likely that wetsuits will be optional. The Lake temperature was measured twice yesterday. In the morning it was 17°C and in the late afternoon it was 18°C.
The thresholds for a 1500m swim are 22°C, at which wetsuits are forbidden and 14°C, at which they become mandatory. It is unlikely that these thresholds will be exceeded before race day but the final decision will be made then.
Results - IoM Triathlon Championships 2014

Copenhagen Ironman
Congratulations to Rob Parker (now 6 time Ironman finisher) and his mum, Di Parker and to Martyn Edwards, both 1st time Ironman competitors, who all completed the Copenhagen Ironman event on Sunday 24th August. Sounds like the weather conditions were very changeable and very challenging. Rob came home in 12:40:14 / Martyn in 12:54:16 and Diane in 15:54:16. Amazing effort by all of them.
