FORD IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 70.3
Our best wishes go to Anthony Bell-Scott who competes in the Ford Ironman World Champs 70.3 this Saturday, 10 November in Clearwater, Florida.  Anthony has had a long and successful season this year, qualifying for this event a few months back. He also represented GB in the European Duathlon Champs in June.  While most Manx Tri Club members have been taking it easy over the last month or so, Anthony has had to stay motivated and focused for this event.  But no wonder he has managed to do so...just look at that venue!!! As with all Ironman events, we should be able to keep track of where Anthony is on the day using the official website.

MANX TRI CLUB - Runners Up Team Award at Bala

And what a notable year it has been for these MTC members!  Juan and Gav are off to Vancouver next year for the Worlds.  Cubby competed at this year's Worlds in Hamburg.  Anthony competed in the European Duathlon Champs earlier this year in Edinburgh.  Graham would have qualified (at Bala) for the Worlds in Vancouver if he had put his name forward for consideration.  And Honks...well, he just looks good!

BALA TRIATHLON
Juan Kinley, Graham Stigant, Gav Quayle, Anthony Bell-Scott, Paul Cubbon and Ian Harrison all endured a very windy Bala Triathlon today.  So rough was the water of Llyn Tegid, the largest fresh water lake in Wales, that the swim was shortened to 1000m. Bala Tri is a qualifier for the Vancouver Age Group World Champs, but there is no information available as to whether anyone else from MTC qualified.  However, our team of six came second in the Team Awards!  Well done to you all. Full results here.

NATIONAL RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Sixteen Manx Tri Club members travelled to Nottingham this weekend for the National Relay Championships.  The teams were as follows: Ladies - Cat Dryden, Eve O'Hare, Ali Clague and Micky Swindale; Juniors - Niall and Ollie Shimmin, Matheu Marshall and Adam Johnson; Men - Paul Swindale, Steve Shimmin, Paul Cubbon and Martin Malone; Vet Men - Gav Quayle, Andy Bell, Juan Kinley and Russell Collister.  The Juniors who were leading third overall after the swim managed a final third position in their category as did the Vet Men. Paul Swindale's eventful race is worth a mention - he punctured and then after changing his wheel was knocked off his bike by a fellow competitor, however, he went on to complete the event.  A trip to Nobles hospital on his return to the Island last night, revealed he had in fact fractured his wrist during the fall! We wish you a speedy recovery Paul! Full results here.
SALCLEAR ISLE OF MAN HALF MARATHON
At least four triathletes took part in this Sunday's Half Marathon: Max Benzance 1:18:49 (third overall); Andrew Dudgeon 1:34:14; Brian McFarland 1:39:05 and John Swindlehurst 1:52:29. Full results here.

ISLAND GAMES SPORTS AWARD FOR TRIATHLON
Graham was nominated to receive the Island Games sports Award for Triathlon for his huge contribution to the sport and the fact that Rhodes will probably have been his last Island Games.  He was presented with the Award at Saturday's Dinner, with the following comments:

"Graham has been involved with triathlon for over 16 years on the Isle of Man, and not only dominated the triathlon events held on the Island for many of those years, but also represented the Isle of Man and Great Britain on many occasions, both in the UK and internationally.  Graham has represented the Isle of Man at every Island Games event where triathlon was held.  During his time participating in the sport, Graham has won several events in his age group at Olympic distance and at one stage was British National Champion in the highly competitive 40-45 age group.  He has represented the Isle of Man at Ironman distance qualifying for the prestigious Hawaii Ironman in 2006.  Graham has been a fabulous ambassador for triathlon and has been responsible for encouraging many new athletes into the sport. He is extremely generous with his time and effort to assist and guide newcomers in the sport and has always been an exemplary sportsman, as gracious in defeat as he is in victory.  Not that he will be retiring any time soon, but Rhodes was possibly Graham's last Island Games and it is fitting that his huge contribution to triathlon on the Island be recognised."

Mention was also made of Niall's outstanding swim and his very credible 17th place finish, particularly as the youngest competitor in the event, and also of all his work that went into designing the Tri Suits which looked really great.

Recognition of Andy C's single minded determination, where he hauled himself back from somewhere around a 30th position after the swim, to finish 11th overall with a superb run, was also mentioned.

RHODES RESULTS
Results are below for the Isle of Man team and men's full results are here and ladies full results are here.  Congratulations to the ladies who won a bronze medal in the team event!!  The men's team narrowly missed a bronze medal by a mere seven seconds.  The team praised the event (despite the stifling heat) which was very well organised and on closed roads.  There was tremendous support around the course (including supporters on pedalos for the swim leg of the event!) from the rest of Isle of Man team.

SNIPPETS FROM THE GAMES
June reports: "All the training is going well, and I think everyone is settled in now. The team are varying cycle rides out, along with organised swim and run practices. Today it's an 'easy' cycle of about 30k and a 30 min run immediately afterwards at 11 am, then a swim around the course at 4.30pm (which is fairly close to their actual start time on race day). The temperature is high 20's / low 30's so hot, but not unbearable.

I think the extract you quoted from the Examiner rather overstates the case. Concerns have arisen because things do seem to have been rather last minute, mainly because the Race Officials only arrive on Wednesday and we obviously need them here to clarify some of the technical race details. It's the not knowing that creates uncertainty. There was a mix-up with the distances published early on, but these are all confirmed as Standard Olympic distances now.

Russ reckons the swim area is one of the nicest open water race areas he's ever competed in. Although it's choppy, the water is so clear that you can read the name of Island under the water on the other competitors tri-suits. The cycle course appears to be pretty much confirmed as the original route advertised - it's only that there are a lot of side streets and lanes/walkways around the town and so it will take a lot of policing on the day. The run course has been altered so that it is now an out and back course of several laps (rather than one) so that it is more spectator friendly and will enable the rest of the road circuit to be re-opened again once the cycle section is finished.

The technical meeting is early Thursday so we should be clearer on the loose ends then."

The team are doing short training sessions finding it difficult to push hard in the 30C plus heat.  The swim course seems challenging in that the "surf is up", on the way out. However, the team are managing to enjoy themselves...eating good food and lying by the pool!!  Apparently their suntans are coming on great!
News just in is that Manx Tri Club member, Lara Ward won a GOLD in one of the shooting events earlier today, although this is not confirmed on the website, which appears to be struggling to deliver accurate information!
For those of you trying to improve your 1500m swim time for an Olympic Distance, be inspired by the Island Games record set last night by Pal Joensen of the Faroe Islands in the Men's 1500m freestyle event - 15:48.25!!!
EUROPEAN DUATHLON CHAMPS - EDINBURGH
Well done to Anthony Bell-Scott who took part in the Champs in wet, windy, hilly conditions last month!

SNIPPETS FROM THE GAMES
June Collister (Triathlon Team Manager) has sent through the first in a series of snippets to keep us informed of what our Triathlon team is up to: "It's all a little chaotic at the moment. Good news is that all the bikes arrived safely and the guys have been organising training sessions each day. The temperature is hot, but not stifling, but running in the heat is proving the tough one."
A team member (who will remain anonymous!) has said "we are all out training together as a team...in team kit - have to admit we look quite good!" We look forward to seeing some photos!! ;)
